The Boat

The boat we hope to be using is an Adkins pairs boat. It is a proven design with plenty of experience and testing with several atlantic crossings. They are designed with safety in mind so in the event of a capsize is it 'self-righting'. It allows the rowers to be self-sufficient with cooking equipment and most inportantly the water desalinator. This produces clean drinkable water from dirty or salty water.
The accomadation is both small and very basic allowing little movement and can hold both rowers if necessary. The cabin is only really designed to house one person at a more comfortable level as the rowing routine usually only allows one person rowing at a time. Within the boat there are several electronic systems powered by solar panels that are fixed on top of the cabin. The electronic systems include the navigational system and VHF radio.

Although we will have limited contact with the world 'on land' we have access to a satelite phone which also acts as a modem so we can update internet blogs and information. Below is some information taken directly from the race organiseers site about the Adkins boat and its previous achievements.

The Adkin boat is the first modern generation composite ocean rowing boat. The boat has been used in a number of combinations from solo's to fours. The design was the previous World Record holder of the Mid-Atlantic Solo speed record, and was the first solo physically disabled crew across any ocean. The boat holds the four man speed record across the Mid-Atlantic and the design has also been successfully rowed around Britain - the first boat ever to do so. In 2006, an Adkin pair was rowed solo across the North Atlantic skippered by Rob Munslow.

We have chosen this boat design for the extremely challenging course across the North Atlantic as a pairs combination in the 2008 North Atlantic Rowing Race. The tooling for this boat design is available for hire or our in house boat building team can produce solo, pairs and triple versions of this boat design.
